Things are getting more and more eccentric at Casa de la Swain. Changing styles in my textile work, falling in love again with painting and photography...and then there is the ever illusive quest for continuing creativity through working with Eric Maisel. Still on the road teaching, posting now at the Ragged Cloth Cafe and taking the pledge to keep handmaiden up to date.

By Popular Demand..More Quotes

First thanks for all the encouraging works on the new works. Recognization from your peers always spurs me on to do better work.... internally, I am always seeking for that new approach or vision....but still my thanks to all of you.
Since the vote was to keep on with the quotes, here's the quote of the day: For art and joy to go together, with bold openess, and high head, and ready----fear nought, dread no exposure. James McNeill Whilster.
How does this apply to us? The easy answer is do the work, forget about what other artist think, never worry what the viewer thinks. There are plenty of discussions about whether art is for the viewer or the artist. IMHO, art is for the artist. That you like my work is very gratifying...if you didn't would I stop...a resounding no. In the final analysis that you like any artist work is icing on the cake...in fact, it should not matter to the artist at all. Art is meant to be evocative...whether good or bad...just evocative of some emotion. Not to beat a dead horse, but Thomas Kincaide leaves me cold...way too cute, way to commercial....however, if you have ever seen some of his older work it is incredible. So we all have to make money and he has found his niche...can't fault him for that.
As to Whistler's quote, the meaning for me is clear, find joy in your work, work as boldly as you can and never worry about exposure to other artist or the viewer.
What's your take on this quote? And please stop me whenever this thread gets old.

I so agree with this! My most accomplished artist friends just have to make art. It seems to be, first and foremost, something they must do - for themsleves. I think it is always a bonus when someone else likes it, too! You can almost see when an artist starts working for the sales or for others - the work becomes less exciting and more run of the mill.

Gabrielle,

I'm sorry. I probably will not be taking part in your quotes this week. Life is kind of getting in the way.

Hopefully others take up challenge of discussing this. I'm already feeling sorry that you seem to have so few comments on your quotes this week.
