Things are getting more and more eccentric at Casa de la Swain. Changing styles in my textile work, falling in love again with painting and photography...and then there is the ever illusive quest for continuing creativity through working with Eric Maisel. Still on the road teaching, posting now at the Ragged Cloth Cafe and taking the pledge to keep handmaiden up to date.

My Amazing Fellow Bloggers and Today's Quote

Y'all are da bomb....picked that up from my sons. Hope that those of you who aren't posting are getting a chance to read some of the most thoughtul articulate responses regarding the art quotes. Should I keep this up for a few more days? Since you aren't here to stop me by placing duct tape on my fingers, we will give it a few more tries. You shouldn't encourage me with such great writing. I am a hopeless lover of the written word.....degree in English Lit and Philosophy...whoo whoo, both huge money makers...so I had to be come an artist which as we all know brings money in by the handfuls :)
Today's Quote: Fine works of art never age, because they are marked by genuine feeling. The language of the passions, the impulses of the heart, are always the same. Eugene Delacroix
I chose this quote for Diane.
In her blog she quoted my statement about "being as good as your last quilt, etc." What I failed to put in the post is this is absolutely the worst attitude we should have. Thanks Diane for waking me up. My post was an intention to get us to realize that all of those things should not be a factor in our work. Who care how many quilts you make if they follow Delacroix's suggestion.
One of my pet peeves ( can you believe a sweet thang like me has a pet peeve?) is when I hear fellow quiltmakers say, " Oh, I have already seen so many of the quilts in other shows...sigh."
Yeah, you know I hate it when you have to look at those pesky Cezanne's, Picasso's, etc again and again. I mean, doesn't it just drive you crazy when you have to look at a really great piece of art more than once......what is the world coming to?
Sure art is ephemeral and certainly art is eternal.....that isn't our problem. Certainly, everything we do is not a masterpiece but it comes from our heart. It ain't gotta a thing, if it ain't gotta that swing....just for you Karoda.

Please keep going with this thought provoking theme. I love it. I'm sorry that I'm not very articulate. I feel so inadequate, not having any kind of art background. i do enjoy reading all the comments.
I agree with the quote, to me art has to elicit an emotional response. Which means it has to come from the heart.
Isn't it great we have this internet blog thing to allow us this time together?

Passions in life are timeless...thus those artists who work using the passions will live forever because their work will always be in context for whatever era we go through. Love, hate, war, peace, spring, rain, snow, forgiveness, joy, whatever, evoke feelings that most people can relate to.
As far as having seen "those" quilts before...the people saying this are those who wouldn't go to a museum or gallery anyway. That's why so many quilt shows have traditional and art quilts...the something for everyone show. Gallery shows, however, are about the art and I don't think anyone there ever says, "oh, I've seen these all before" I could look at some of the pieces at Visions forever...however, some just didn't appeal to me at all and although I studied them I really don't want to spend more time on them.

The work of the Gee's Bend quilters comes to mind. They used whatever materials they could get their hands on and made art becasue they just had to do it. No formal education - it was art from the heart.

I thought maybe you were saying that "only as good as your last piece," not because you believed it, but because it's what you may hear or fear or worry about on some level... Glad you clarified!

Next time I hear a comment about seeing the same quilts in shows, I'm going to reply, "How lucky for us to be able to see such a great piece again!"
